He was the charismatic leader of the ANC (African National Congress). All his life, he fought for freedom and equality between blacks and whites in South Africa, against racism.
He was sent to jail in 1962, and relased in 1990. He spent 27 years in prison on Robben Island.
He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 and elected first black President of South Africa in 1991.
He passed away last night in Johannesburg. May Nelson Mandela rest in peace.
